BOLDTYPE ISSUE #38: Artwork By
The cover of this issue of Boldtype is a detail of a street art work by Swoon. The image appears in the book Graffiti Women: Street Art from Five Continents, written by Nicholas Ganz and published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc.
A Brooklyn-based graffiti artist, Swoon was born in New London, Connecticut in 1977. She has been showing her life-size, expressionistic paper cutouts and block prints of common people on the walls of New York and other international cities for the past five years. Her subjects are drawn from the streets and often become integrated with elements of local architecture in her work. Using wheat paste, she strategically places her illustrations throughout the urban landscape.
Not overlooked by the art community, Swoon's work has been exhibited in New York, Cincinnati, Miami, and Berlin. She had a solo show at Deitch Projects in New York in 2005 and was included in the group exhibitions Greater New York 2005 at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in Long Island City and Since 2000: Printmaking Now at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 2006. She is represented by Deitch Projects, New York.
